A reflection in biblical principles of civil government and the Nigerian case
The Churches in Nigeria are apolitical and in their scandalous disunity, seem not to be able to offer any solution to the ugly, and multifaceted problems we brought upon ourselves as a nation. However, a united Church, on the principle of Social Ecumenism, can be a veritable instrument for the solution we need through godly principles, righteous political structure for social development, and national integration in Nigeria, being lights and salt to the nation.
What is Ecumenism?
Ecumenism is from the Greek word Oikoumene, which means the unity of the whole earth. Occupy.ng app is aimed at the unity of the whole Church in Nigeria to form Consensus Political Movement or Political Action Committees, mobilizing all the various denominations represented under Christian Association of Nigeria, in order to occupy the mountain of government, cascading from the grassroots level to the national level as commanded by Jesus Christ in the book of Luke 19:13b. “Occupy till I come.”
This is based on the conviction that doctrine divides while service unites. Service to God through service to humanity will unite the Church according to Matt. 25:40 “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
Unity of the Body
The government of God in any nation rest upon the Shoulders of the Body of Christ, the Church in that nation and its the responsibility of the United Church to superimpose the principles of Kingdom of God upon civil governments of each nation according to the book of Isaiah 9:6; and then
Rev. 11:15 will become our reality and,
“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
Service
The greatest service the Church can offer humanity is to bring the reality and the blessings of the Kingdom of God, which are righteousness, peace, joy in the Holy Ghost into every areas of our influence. Roman 14:17
“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost”
Kingdom come
However, what God gave to the Church as her first assignment, has not been considered after the failed attempt during the reign of Emperor Constantine. Matt. 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
If we then obey our Cultural Mandate, Christian principles would serve as the Superstructure upon which the modern Nigerian nation would be established and administered by those who are called into politics as a mission field.
